The MAYA Collection artisans will be making an appearance at 5-0-Lou during our Valentine Extravaganza. They will be showcasing a new technique using discarded pennies to make sophisticated, heart-shaped jewelry. And we are chuffed to have them. Why? Well, number one they make awesome products with high quality materials. Number two, we love their business model.
The MAYA Collection is a socially conscious business. What does that mean? It means they have created a business with a social purpose in its mission. At first glance, the MAYA Collection ticks all the boxes for what would make a strong nonprofit: They are helping refugees develop business skills; they are serving a specific group of people in crisis; they have created a means by which a community within a community can express themselves; they have opened up a path towards financial independence for a group of women who might otherwise be overlooked in the job market. The latter is where the business part comes into play. The artisans that work with the MAYA Collection keep 100% of the profits from their crafting output. Hence the for profit structure. So each time you buy a MAYA Collection necklace or bracelet at 5-0-Lou you're contributing to the financial independence of a Nepalese refugee living in Louisville. Pretty cool right?
We’ve been carrying MAYA Collection jewelry and home accessories since we first opened our doors. Our shoppers love the leather bracelet with the brass, copper, and silver state of Kentucky.
The word “maya” in the Nepali language means love. You’ll often find their knits and jewelry decorated with a small heart shape, a signature of the MAYA Collection brand.
Meet some of the artisans from the MAYA Collection on February 10th from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. during or Valentine Extravaganza. You’ll also be able to sample Me Care spa products, locally made with real bourbon, enjoy mocktails, live music with Aaron Crane. Pick up a Valentine’s gift bucket, a fresh flower bouquet, or get your couple’s caricature drawn by local artist Henry Gentry.

We’re all about partnership at 5-0-Lou and our collaboration with Barrel Head is a match made in bourbon heaven. We’re also all about customizing, from a t-shirt to a mug to a bourbon barrel.
Here’s how this bourbon barrel thing works: 1) Decide on the artwork you would like printed on your bourbon barrel product, 2) Visit our storefront and tell the sales associate at the counter you’d like to order a custom bourbon barrel, 3) Fill out the form and pay the deposit, 4) Wait for a bit while Barrel Head prepares your custom order, 5) Pick up your custom bourbon barrel at 5-0-Lou.
Before going all crazy and ordering each one of your grand kid's names on bourbon barrels, here are some things you should know: 1) Depending on the type of bourbon barrel product you want to print on, we may need to get a quote first; 2) The custom part of the bourbon barrel product is the artwork that is being printed onto it, not the shape of the bourbon barrel itself. In other words, you’ll have a selection of bourbon barrel pieces that you can print original artwork on; 3) We recommend ordering this custom gift far in advance from the day you plan to gift it to the recipient; 4) Make sure you are prepared with a high quality file print file for the artwork.
This is the ultimate, customized Kentucky local gift. Imagine all the man caves that could use a bourbon barrel quarter printed with the insignia of a favorite team or the family coat of arms. What about a sign for your business? Or a one-of-a-kind statement piece for your home?
